Plasma Quench?

Post by msc »

I just got my 4 x4 Delusional Design CNC table last night. I will comment further on it as I accomplish something. I am trying to find Plasma Quench or equivalent to put in the water table. I cannot find it anywhere, on-line or local. I know there are homemade alternatives but I don't even know where to get items such as Sodium Nitrite and Physan, or for that matter even what they are. What should I do about the water?

I am being very humbled by all this and would appreciate any assistance.

Thanks, Mark

we use washing soda in our table to control rust
that is all we use, it is cheap at $5 per box and you can flush it down the drain
available at wallmart

dito on the washing soda.
I also use it to neutralize the acid bath (cleaning dross and mill scale) I scrub the parts after the acid bath then blow dry with shop air.

we use 2/3 of the box in our 4x8 table
mix it well in a 5 gallon bucket first, if you just pour it in it will turn into concrete :D
i chuck up a T-handle allen wrench in my cordless drill and pour washing soda into 3 gal of water while spinning the drill

My table is two weeks old now and on your advice I am using Washing Soda. No rust at all but I sure do get a lot of water spotting and what's looks like a slight powdery buildup In the slats and anywhere the water splashes up which is a lot of places. Is this normal? How concerned should I be with spot build up on the torch and tracks?

I was hoping to keep the table looking new until at least I paid the credit card bill.

You will get the water spotting, that's just the nature of water tables. Unfortunately plasma cutting is a dirty process, no way around that. You can make up a splash guard that goes on the bottom of the torch to contain the splashing. (I used the rubber bottom of a small toilet plunger) You can control where the torch goes to help control the splashing also. (Such as leaving it where it stops cutting instead of returning home)

The only way to keep your table looking new is to not use it! :D

I figured that was the answer. Should I put silicone or anything on the tracks and such or just use it and be proud of the mess?

Or....you could switch to a well designed downdraft table....no splash!

Thanks Jim, but I just took the plunge into the whole Cnc thing. Downdraft maybe I. The future but for now I am happy I have a CNC let alone a warer table.

Other than appearances, will the water hurt anything?

Water will increase bottom dross, as it will cool the molten metal on the bottom (back) of the material. It may splash and create dome watermarking. If it splashes into the torch (and stays there), it may cause issues.

On the upside, objects that you cut are usually cool enough to pick up with a bare hand. The cooling aspect reduces warping. It makes a HUGE difference in smoke/dust. I wanted to cut few "quick" parts this weekend, and didn't bother filling the water table. Holy HELL! The garage still stinks, and I'm still blowing crap out of my nose! I won't make that mistake again.

If you have the room/facilities, I can see benefits to a downdraft system. For those of us in confined spaces/limited resources, I think a water table is an excellent option.
