5/16 mild steel

Post by primaldesigns »

I have been cutting 14ga mild steel on my table for a couple of years. I have had a request to cut some 5/16 mild steel brackets. I have never cut anything thicker than 14ga since I use the fine cut consumables. Does anyone know what the setting should be to cut the 5/16 steel plate. I have a Hypertherm Powermax 65 if that helps.

Thank you in advance.

Your Powermax 65 will cut from 26 to 10 gauge at 45 amps with Finecut consumables, from 12 gauge through 1/4" with the 45 amp shielded consumables, and from 3/16" through 5/8" (edge start to 1-1/4") with the 65 amp shielded consumables.

To cut each thickness with the best quality.....open your Powermax 65 up to the mechanized cut charts and use the consumables suggested and set the amperage, cut height, pierce height, pierce delay, arc voltage just exactly as suggested. If you have a thickness that falls in between two thicknesses on the chart....set the cut speed exactly in between the cut speed of the thicker and thinner specs.

I would use the 45 amp shielded consumables for best results.

Hey Jim,
You're saying use the 45amp consumables and settings to cut the 5/16 plate.

Sorry, my mistake......I meant to say the 65 amp shielded consumables. Using the cut charts set the cut speed just between the listings for 1/4" and 3/8". Jim Colt Hypertherm
