Powermax 45 Air Flow Rates

Post by AndrewMawson »

I'm reviewing my air distribution system hence asking:

With the Powermax 45 set to the 'Test Air' position and air flowing, does that equate to the air that is being used when the torch is cutting ? I'm trying to assess pressure drops in the system, and its virtually impossible to be measuring things as the table is flying about whereas obviously the 'test' position is much more benign !

When air flows without the plasma arc on...it actually flows slightly more air than when the arc is on. The arc heats and expands the air which causes somewhat of a restriction as the arc exits the nozzle orifice. Another way to flow the air is to trigger the torch quickly....too quick to fire the torch, but the torch then goes into post flow for between 10 and 20 seconds (depending on which system you have).

Thanks Jim,

So just to confirm my understanding - when in test mode it's a 'worse case' . I assume 'post flow' is no greater flow rate ?

It is exactly the same between post flow and test flow, both are higher in actual flow than it will be when cutting. Jim Colt
