I Shouldn't Post This...

This 3-piece (four, if you make the pan) is so damn basic, but it works! Once the ends are in place, it can't collapse.
I used 7awg for the top & 10 or 11 awg for the ends. No hardware, hinges or tools needed.
You can add any design you want for the grill top OR ends. Field tested and it does work really well.

Bill that is great.
A small canvas shopping bag will probably carry all that .

Now how in the hell did you have time with all that shipping stuff to Canada ,coloring your own projects and answering every phone call from buyers to do something so simple ;)

This is what we call a multi-tasker!!!

Now ,I have one question ,how thin of gauge do you think we could use for the top grill piece before it becomes a warped mess... :D thinking of what we have in spare steel is the reason for the question.

Thanks
Gary

Gary,

If you make it smaller, you could use 10awg for the top, but NOT the way it's drawn...you'd need to burn a different grill pattern e.g. holes, diagonal slots, etc. The way the top is drawn above is the worst possible way to do it because of heat warpage while cooking. But, I couldn't find the last file I did, which is represented in the photo...of diagonal slots. That configuration makes it easy to use a spatula from almost any direction. But, I found that 3/16" plate works best for the top. Just be sure that the receiver slots on each end are slightly (15-20%) wider than the gauge steel used for the ends. That will allow the ends to splay out for support.

Tried it and an FYI to anyone who might cut this, be careful about the slot that holds the legs. Too wide, and your legs will lower the cooking surface onto the fire. And THANKS Bill...I think it will fit in my Goldwing's trunk.

The leg gap is a little touchy...mine was set up for 10awg ends & I cut the 7awg top with fine-cut consumables. Worked out just fine with about a 20-25 degree outward cant to each end. You could also weld a small section of .5" Sq. Stock, maybe 3-4" long & position it on the bottom of the grill, next to the end-piece slot, to prevent "over-splay".

I was thinking with bills design you could resize it and make the top a pan also that just fits like a box and the legs would fit inside for transportation? I am going to try this and will post picks if it works good

That is the craziest grass I have ever seen. Is the HOT big enough for a chicken wing to fall through? I think I am going to have to make one of these, but clearly I am going to have to customize it like you did.

I used your basic design and made one for my brother-in-law. You can't build fires on the ground around the riveres out here, so this and a fire pan are very nice equipment. Thanks for the design!!
