Read your history, During Franklin’s era, there was myth that a severed snake would come back to life if the pieces were put together before sunset.
The cartoon depicts the early American colonies as a snake divided into eight segments. Toward the head of the snake, “NE” represents New England, followed by “NY” (New York), “NJ” (New Jersey), “P” (Pennsylvania), “M” (Maryland), “V” (Virginia), “NC” (North Carolina) and “SC” (South Carolina). Even though there were four “New England” colonies, Franklin lumped them into one category to stress the need for colonial unity. At the time, the colonists fiercely debated expanding west of the Appalachian Mountains and fighting the French and their Indian allies.

P.S. "We are fools if we believe our United States is somehow immune from such machinations. “One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,” has been a brilliant experiment but for it to work as envisioned requires a different kind of populace than the one we have devolved into."

You're very welcome. It seems that history is not taught any more, it has been replaced with "lets change the past to suit our thoughts at the moment" If something doesn't fit what we want, it must be wrong or bad and we will change it to be GOOD. Some people want to rewrite history to make everything either GOOD or BAD (can not say BLACK or WHITE any more). Street signs, school names, team mascots and team names must be changed to fit with the thinking of the protesters that wish to live in a "fairytale" world where everything is perfect as they see it.

Good take Larry. Also, Jefferson stated that a 2 party system would not work, it would ultimately divide the country and create the BS we are dealing with in today's system. Amazing what foresight some of these men had....

Harry, I do agree with keeping politics off of here, but this isn't politics. It's history that is linked to an image that we can cut with our plasmas. :) I love this one because it does exactly what has happened in this thread, it sparks interest, questions and encourages learning.

How about if you don't like what others seem to enjoy chatting about on this chat forum, you simply skip the thread and find something that does interest you...sheeeeesh.

Many forums actually have "off topic" chat. It actually gives some diversity and allows the chat to veer now and again to other subjects of interest. I'd say it helps keep things "alive" when plasma chat may go a little quiet.

Kudos to all of you. I saw this a couple times and wondered what in the world it symbolized. Even asked the other members of my household and no one knew, now we do. Good and interesting info!!! Love a lively chat.

Awesome file, vanhulagen!
I took the liberty, (pun intended) to add the text to the file indicating the colonies.
Great explanation, Larry.
