Another Firepit

Post by Econdron »

This isn't my design, I copied the design from someone else, but I did draw this up myself. I quoted it to a customer and figured I draw it up anyway even if they don't order it since I'll probably cut one for myself. I would love if someone could cut this before I do and tell me how it fits together! Designed to be cut from 1/4" thick steel, the slots are 0.27" to provide some clearance. Overall dimensions are around 30" W x 36" L x 12" H. The flat piece that sits in the frame is 8" W x 34.25" L. I think the square holes are for adding a gas setup. It's a neat design because it all slides in place and can easily be taken apart for storage. Here's some pictures of the 3D rendering I put together. You'll need to cut 2 of the sides, 2 of the walls and 1 bottom piece.

What I always do whenever I have pieces fitting together like this is draw up a couple small pieces with slots in them, then test fit the fit and adjust as necessary, just as a tip.

Just looking at the design, what keeps the bottom from tipping and sliding down? I think it needs tabs that fit into slots on the two long sides to prevent that. JMHO

Has anyone else cut this yet? I just cut it out a couple days ago. I did a test fit and I thought the fit was too loose. I didn't adjust the drawing, I just slightly scaled down the file when loaded into SheetCAM. I think I did 1:24.5 instead of 1:25.4. I should have just kept it, the fit was too tight and once it did go together, it's a pain getting it apart. I just have it setup as a display in my showroom, so no big deal. As for the center piece falling down, it actually fits pretty nicely. I think the angles are steep enough to keep it centered pretty well. You have to push down pretty hard on one side to get it to slide off-center at all.

So I'm just curious if anyone cut the file as-is and if it went together smoothly or not?
