That is a great idea. I made one today but added 2 in in box width. I plan to make several more but in 16 ga. steel.

I like the design, but I think I will be adding a couple of tabs to bend out on each side to allow for stacking, much like the plastic counterparts.

I cut one of these.... The gaps ended up being a little bigger then I'd have liked. I'm going to tweak it a little, and plan to cut a bunch of them. I'm considering a way to hang them.

I welded a piece of 1/2" angle on the back of it so it would hang off of a strip of 1/4" X 2" strap, worked beautifully!
going to size some more up so they will hold more (rivets) but this is super cool way to use scrap!

I made a few different sizes and added some tabs to the back plate to act as a hook. Then I was able to hang the tray into some slots in a plate (see pic). The plate is the same concept as pegboard, just welded to the legs of my fab table. I needed a place to temporarily de-clutter tools, nuts, and bolts whenever I'm welding. Plus it gives my 2 year old a place to put the nuts and bolts that he picks up off the shop floor.
