Homemade Roller Bender

Post by Larry83301 »

Thought I would share this from http://www.instructables.com Very simple DO IT YOURSELF bender/roller that everybody should be able to make. Great addition to the shop! Watch the video and be impressed by what it can do.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Homemad ... dium=email

I was signed in when I copied the link so I hope it works for you, if not just do a search of the site for the bender/roller and you should find it. Everything you need to be able to build one is in the instructions.

Believe it or not yours will look like this.

Have fun! :D :D :D

Neat I'm sure many here could draw up the parts from flat stock instead of "I" beam.
Did anybody click on the electromagnet link at the end might be another neat project for lifting sheets of steel for moving. 8-)

Nice idea, Thanks for the share Larry.

Shame I didn't see this a week ago, I might have built one. My Harbor Freight model came in yesterday evening, I set it up and used it this morning with no problems. For the price and convenience of not having to do it myself it was a good buy.

Also picked up a set of these dies http://www.harborfreight.com/3-piece-die-set-66598.html

Thanks Larry,

even if I don't use that exact design, any ideas I can pick up from it are great.

WOW! $20 for those dies sure makes me feel I wasted some time and material making my own.

Apparently lots of guys are getting those dies, putting them in the lathe and shaping them to just about any size/shape they want with excellent results ....man I wish I had a lathe

I need to buy/make/come up with one. One that is known to work well is even better! lol If you still have the files, I'd certainly appreciate a copy. I like the repeatability of your yours.

Re: Homemade Roller Bender

Was digging through my files & found this.

This is the final file I used to make the last several rollers. The sides connect using 1/2" I.D. DOM tube and 1/2" bolts. The tabs weld into the slots at the bottom for attaching to a bench.

The most difficult part of making your own roller is the carriage for the bearings. It should be 1/2" minimum thickness, and has to be very accurate or it will show in the accuracy of the rolled goods. If you have an old Harbor freight roller you can rob the carriage from that & save a lot of time.

The other tabs are for the spring return on the jack plate... If you look at the video I posted earlier in the thread you can pretty much see how it all goes together.

Happy Rolling!

I have trouble opening/saving some of the dxf files offered on this great site and would like to know if anyone has an answer.
I use Qcad (registered version) when I open files (not all just a few) it'll show up in my cad but, I am unable to modify the file.
I hover over the lines but are unable to select any or all of the lines/entities.
I'm able to scroll over to select it, explode the file and it disappears.
I would be grateful for any and all help on this issue.

Thanks in advance Jim

Thanks oldsarge. Love your setup with the digital readout. Should make repeatability easy! I'll need to duplicate that setup! Did you (or do you) offer these commercially, or is that just your personal unit?

Thanks! I offered them when I was doing things full time, but not anymore. The one in the video was one I sold a while back, and I have a unit I kept for my own use. The digital gauge is a pretty slick setup & I'm glad I took the time to add it.... I'll take another look, I think I had a separate file for a mounting bracket to attach the gauge to the carriage. If I can find it I'll post it later.

Anyone have any recommendations for a roller bender for small stock? I'm looking to bend some circles out of 1/4" and 1/8" stainless rod which makes the above roller benders seem a little overkill. I guess I could have dies made for the smaller stock.

Well, I finally went through a file conversion process, got it to open and can work with it as a DXF now.

I thought I posted this the other day, but there is a 3D model of the roller in the original post on grabcad.com if anyone is interested. I think it has been converted to inches as well.
