Dumping hopper plans??

Post by Thor »

Does anyone have plans to build a 1.5 yd or so self dumping hopper? Would really come in handy for scrap steel, but they seem to get crazy high dollars to buy them, even used ones are pricey to me for what they are. I think I could build 1 or 2 for myself pretty reasonably just have to draw it up, thought I'd check if anyone had the files already.

I did find one on grabcad, but as is not the most plasma cut friendly version, I've seen some where the rolling part has just like 1/2" thick plasma cut plate with fingers.

Make your dump hopper yet, show it off if you have.

I whipped this up quickly this afternoon as I too am interested in making these.... I got this far before I had to leave for work... but now I am pretty much stumped because I don't know how to make this cut in solidworks... (the cam slot and have it be correct through the rotation of the bin...)

That looks good, I am going to cut .5 or .75" plate with nipples that roll into slots on the frame instead of the slot cam slot.

I've spent a little time this afternoon on a hopper design.. This one is a gravity dump. I may put these into plan form and sell the plans.. I just have to build one first and make sure it works.

Honestly no. I picked up two of them at an auction for $100 bucks and totally petered out on the design.

I will say this.. one I picked up is so very similar to what I modeled up, and it SUCKS. If you have it raised up ready to dump, gravity and weight makes unlatching it impossible because of the bind it puts on the latch pin. If you unlatch it on the ground when you raise it to try and get it dumped into a bin/trailer its just going to spill as you lift it.

So, unless you're willing to actually set the hopper on your dumpster/trailer it will work. For me, I wasn't resting 3500lbs on the side of my new dump trailer to unlatch the hopper. I load it from the back only, which makes me limited on things.

Good information, thanks. I will probably draw and share one myself this year and keep that in mind when planning. I want something similar in size to what you came up with. Would like to stow below the plasma so it's easy to throw waste into then fork out when time to dump.

This has been on my list of things to design and build. The one I have at my shop is way too complicated to make. A friend has one at his shop I keep meaning to go over and measure it/reverse engineer it but never get around to it.

This is one of 2 I’ve modified. Originally I cut the faces off so I could put 2 back to back on the front of an equipment trailer an dump off each side. It was to wide hence the reason for cutting them. But now it’s just a garbage can. I did have to add some weight on the front after cutting them to get it to dump itself. My next modification with be to add a push release latch. It’s a pain if I have the door on my skidsteer.
