3d "soccer ball"...definitely NOT a fire pit

Post by Kaos2016 »

I watched the "geodesic fire pit" files get a lot of attention and get taken down, so I thought I'd post this file I worked on over the weekend. You can get half of the dome in a 4' x 4' sheet. The bend angles are 138 degrees for the hex to hex parts, and 142.5 degrees for the hex to pent parts. if you start bending at the score lines, essentially the faces will start to match up. As for artwork, you can add anything you like. I marked to top facing edge with a point, so you could know how the pieces will face after being bent. However, the dxf if for a bottom, so it would be the opposite edge for the top. at scale, it should make about a 27" diameter sphere.

it looks amazing. What thickness to you cut it out by. Also I'm Aussie, so if I scale this in AutoCAD x 25.4 it should work out the same?

Thanks

The bend allowances are for 11ga or 3mm...yes, scaling it by 25.4 will convert it to metric.

I'm thinking about getting a copyright to hang photographs on the wall, perhaps in a predetermined size, rectangular shaped aparatus.

Very cool. How do you guys calculate your bending angles?
Wondering if it's easier for me to make each piece individually due to the size of my table

That's pretty cool! Thanks for sharing. I might make one solid just for funsies.

I must have missed the thread with the fire pit thing... I assume there was lots of drama... Is the thread gone? I like to see that stuff it makes me laugh.

The angles are listed in the original post. To get the angles right, you can cut out a triangle with one angle at the correct degree and then tack it or clamp it to the pieces to be welded together. Once you get two together, the rest should start falling into place.
