I just used rattle can red and blue. Let it dry and hit it with the oxy-acetylene torch for some scorch marks. Another way to go would be to use "Tint-It" rattle can which is iridescent paint you can pick up at most craft stores.

By the way, the dxf I shared is cut ready and will need a couple of tacks in a couple of spots to make it not so "flimsy". The original picture on this post is not my cut out, so I can't take credit for the paint job on that one. Mine turned out very similar though.

Metal Worx is not my site. I believe he got the dxf from here though. I have a facebook art page called Mortons Metal Art. As for a good size to cut out, I would't go any less than 24" on the length, otherwise, it may not have the details you will desire.
