SheetCam Development version

Post by djreiswig »

I thought I'd take a look at the dev version and see what's different. I noticed a couple of neat things like hovering over the error balloon showing where the problem lies. There are also some nice right click menu shortcuts for frequently used tools like nexting. What are the major improvements in the dev version over the stable version?

Also, I tried to load my default toolset from the stable version into the dev version, but it seem to be stuck on the original default toolset. Are they different file formats?

I tried copying the TNG toolset into the Dev folder over the file. It still opens with the original default tools. They must be coded in the program somewhere.
The balloons appear when there is a problem with the drawing like an open path. If you hover over the balloon it zooms the part to show where the problem is.

Its not a process of copying. You have to go into SheetCAM and use the Open toolset (under Files) and point it to the actual toolset then it moves it to the "running " toolset group (stored in WIndows in a User profile/directory) versus a place in SheetCAM. The default toolset is also stored in another place and its not something you want to try and copy or modify in the file itself. Load a new toolset then make it the default. While you can have boith Stable and Development on the same PC they are totally separate and operate using their own files. Manually mixing them is not a good idea

I think I tried loading it through the menu as well. I'll try that again.

You can download the Dev version from SheetCam.com. if you have a license for sheetcam it works with the Dev version too.

Okay. I figured it out. When I loaded the toolset file from the menu, SheetCam changed the names of all my tools. The names were of the format "Plasma, 0.054 in kerf". My tools are named with the amperage and material thickness.

I found out that when you open or create a tool there is a checkbox in the tool settings window called "Automatically generate name". This was checked. When I unchecked it, and then reloaded the toolset the tool names were all correct.
I think this setting sticks, because I've loaded other toolsets in TNG and never ran into this behavior.

I assumed that since the tool names are saved in the toolset file that they would load from the file. I guess for some reason if this checkbox is checked, the names in the file are ignored and they are recreated using the tool settings.
So the only way around this issue is bring up the settings window and uncheck the box before loading a toolset. I think it would be less confusing to show this checkbox when loading a toolset if the names are not going to be loaded as they are saved in the file.

I'm not sure where it would be desirable to load a toolset and rename all of the tools automatically.

The name tools automatically is a "feature" that gives a unique name to new tools as you create them but as you said its not an advantage with existing tools.

I agree. I see how it could be useful, but not when it automatically changes things you don't expect. Maybe since it is in the Dev version Les will see this post and consider adding a selection to the import window.

I am running Linux. I don't think there is a dev version for Linux.

According to the recent changes list:
V6.1.0 - V6.1.3 various changes to compile under Linux.

There are several other mentions of Linux in the recent changes list, so maybe there is a dev version.

The Linux version is the dev version. There isn't currently a linux version of Stable.
