how to setup a outline cut

I dont know if I titled it right but if I am trying to cut out say any shape part of a sign. It could be a dog, car or anything but I do not want to fully cut out the shape by removing all the material inside but I want to cut the outline of the shape with adding in some notches to keep it from falling out. Is there a way to do this in inkscape? Thank you for any help

You can use the node tool to remove or add nodes to a drawing, To make notches click on the node tool and the click on a node (one end to removed section) then hold the shift key down and click on the next node (the other end). The 2 nodes will be little blue boxes then click on the box shown in the image this will remove the section between the 2 selected nodes.
If you want to remove a section in another location you can add nodes to the area and then remove between them. You just put the cursor where you want a node and double click and a node box will appear there. The add another node for the notch and high light the 2 nodes with the shift key and remove them.

wow much easier this way, thank you. I was trying to do offsets and add sections in which was not really working.

another thing is the box to the left is if you want to connect 2 nodes, use the same selection and click on the box and it connects the nodes.

I did notice that and was playing around with both of those. Theread some pretty neat tricks this software can do.

It sounds like you want to add tabs to a piece so that the outline is mostly cut but doesn't drop out. With Inkscape requires you to use the "union" feature between separate shapes.

There are videos on YouTube that can explain this design concept better than I could in a long post. I would search Inkscape Union Plasma keywords
