sign weight

Post by blackandtan »

I am trying to find a way to get the weight of a sign before it is cut. I am sure there is a way to find out how much area there is in the sign but I have no idea what program could tell me that. If anyone knows I would appreciate so information on it. I use CorelDraw X6 but I don't think that will do it.

If you use Sheetcam, the job report might give you the information you are looking for.

The place where I buy my metal has the weights of different thicknesses online. You can figure out the thickness and then do a quick calculation with help from the SheetCAM report.

HRS Sheet Weights

Common sign metals...
14ga 3.125lbs per Sqft
16ga 2.5lbs per sqft

I tried in sheet cam but it gives the overall height and width area unless I missed it somewhere. Just to try it out I drew a 48"x96" rectangle with a 36"x84" rectangle cut out of it but it still shows in the report job area 4624.574. I know that would be an easy one to figure out the weight on but when you start adding designs in there that are not square or round it would be a lot harder.

In Autocad if you have a closed area, properties will give the area of it. You would just have to add them all up.

I found a macro Cadtool 5 for corel that will tell you the area an then just figure the weight per square foot and it worked pretty good for what I needed. I just needed to let the customer know how heavy it would be before I wasted my time messing with it anymore. It was the biggest I have done so far at 5x10 and 280 lbs my little $400 forklift came in handy. Thanks for all of the suggestions.
