student version

Post by hacnwac »

A couple of years ago I bought X6 from the plasma store here and its been great. My problem now is that I need to install it on a different 2nd laptop and I've lent it out and the disc is gone. I was just wondering if i got a student version to keep the cost down can I just use it and send the file to the full version of x6 and export dxf file from it. I have a tracker table and I usually export as a plotter file anyways but I don't know if the student version can even do that.
Thanks Mark

My education edition of x7 does everything (my wife is a teacher). The only difference according to the lady that I spoke with at Corel said that on the education edition it says " not for commercial use" on the top of the program screen. On the old versions they used to limit the export types and not include fonts and extra stuff but now it just says that.

The X7 student version does DXF, SVG, and a ton of others that I don't use.

Just guessing here as I don't have Corel but did you try "save as" and see if there is a pull down to select dxf?

I tried lots of thing's and was on the wire, because of what I read here. Figured I would try it because it was so affordable where as the full one is out of my budget. Just found this fine print on a Corel help site. Trying to clarify this post.

There's a difference between student version and student edition. You want a green box for Corel. The yellow/orange one will not allow DXFs.

I had the same issue, that's why I posted that it wouldn't do dxf's so others wouldn't waste their money like I did.

One thing you can do that may save you some money is to find a used full version of X3/X4 etc... You should be able to pick that up off of Fleabay for 30-50 bucks. Then, once purchased, install and you can then buy the Upgrade. Look for it to be on sale from Corel, you can find upgrades for usually under 200 bucks. This is a lot cheaper than purchasing the full version outright.

I was wrong in my original post as it was x5 I had purchased from plasma store. I ended up doing what Gamelord mentioned above and got a good deal ($50 ) on x5. Gamelord is correct as well in the fact that corel has advertised upgrading to the newest version for as low as $174 CAD. I just haven't taken advantage of it yet.
Thanks Mark

This may be completely irrelevant. I found that with the program I use I must "select all" or nothing happens when I try to export. Took me a long while to figure that one out!

This also may be irrelevant but I have x7 "Education Edition" not "Student" and everything seems to function properly. It does say "not for commercial use" as btburn mentions above. I do have some problems with DWG files but it's probably operator error not the software as I am still learning Corel and have a long way to go. Apparently there is a difference between the student and education versions, go figure. I was going to share the link from ebay where I purchased mine but I could not find it, again go figure. I hope this helps. Thanks D
