What Stepper Motor Acceleration are you guys running?

Post by Nacs Fab »

I have .281 oz motors and just need a checkup on your acceleration numbers if any of you have something near mine?

Accel - Force/Mass

Linear force in Ft-lbs is a function of rotary force at a given RPM. (Steppers lose torque with RPM) If you have any belt reduction between motor and pinion your force is multiplied by the ratio. A usable target for cutting up to 200 IPM is about 25Ips/sec accel. Higher is better. As you can see from the formula the MASS (weight in lbs/32) is inversely proportional to acceleration. The heaver it is the harder it is to accelerate it (make it change speeds)

The best way is to start low and crank up the numbers until it starts losing steps at higher velocities. Unless your gantry weighs the same and has the same final drive ratios and even the same size pinion someone with the same size motors won't have the same acceleration limits.
