Re: Firepit (help)
I do not know what anyone's schedule is but it may be handy for some to take some trig classes on say Khan or at the local community college. There are many great tools out there to figure out angles but many times it is faster to just do it on paper. I am not trying to sound mean or judgmental just throwing some ideas around. There are so many classes I've taken that help me with my table and designs that (trig and statics being the top two) I know it would benefit so many others as well.

Re: Firepit (help)
Poor mans way is to make it out of 1/4" cardboard (or whatever thickness you are going to use). Then when you have all the pieces cut, use tape and fold it all flat, then you can get your measurements from that. You would still have to draw it but you can draw it to the exact measurements very easily. Or, just take a picture of it with your phone, import the picture into your drawing program, scale it up in size until it is the correct size of your cutout, then convert it to a DXF file for cutting. You could do each piece as needed.
The easiest way to do it is to just design it in cad/corel/adobe (or whatever your drawing program is) but if you really don't know the math process to figure all the angles / dimensions, the cardboard with sharpie markers is easy and if you mess up, just grab another piece and cut again.
I have made a ton of brackets for a lot of different jobs by using a piece of cardboard and some boxing tape for mock-ups. You can do it on site if you are away from your computer/shop.

Re: Firepit (help)
The 3 "large" files go together. The other 3 files are for the smaller version. I put the smaller "bottom plate" in the wrong spot outside the attachment area but you can still download it.Binderman wrote:I need some clarification.
Which files are used for the smaller pit?
The design is amazing I just can't figure out which side and bottom plates to use as it looks like both have a sister file.
Thanks!!!

Re: Firepit (help)
Bump for an old thread, anyone know how to convert the tab\slot files so they can be cut out of 1/8" tread plate? Or is that even possible? Please excuse my ignorance.

Re: Firepit (help)
tylerd,
Note: I been lurking here for some time but rarely post, but do have a serious interest in getting my own table.
So as an exercise (practice) for myself I modeled the fire pit from the .dxf files in this thread. (using Sketchup 2018 Pro)
IDK about tread plate, but I had a go at resizing the file from 1/4" plate to 1/8" plate.(see .dxf's)
Perhaps some more experienced members can review the files attached and comment if they will cut?
EDIT: Realized Inkscape requires Autocad V2013 .dxf files & I added .svg files.

Re: Firepit (help)
Sweet! Yeah I am too novice with the software at this point to be able to tell if it will cut either. Pretty sure treadplate is just the HRS version of diamond plate. Hopefully someone will comment on the viability of these files so I can give it a shot soon!!
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

Re: Firepit (help)
Tautog, I did a dry run on the bottom piece and it ran without issue! I took some measurements with my new cheap digital calipers, and .125 would be to small as the "Tread" portion of the diamond plat is far thicker. 3/16ths or .1875 should work, and prob a better gauge to make these out of for the rest of the users here. Don't suppose I could talk you into re-drawing to the new dimensions? I hate asking and will be happy when I can do such things on my own, but still have a ways to go on the software part of it. This will be a good test for my DTHC IV also, as I have never attempted to cut diamond plate on my machine! I actually just did my first cuts this week and they turned out great, will post pics soon.

I can easily (happily)revise the files, I just need to be clear on what size you think the “female” openings need to be?tylerd wrote:Tautog, I did a dry run on the bottom piece and it ran without issue! I did wonder how the tread plate “bumps” would factor in, figured maybe you would just grind if/as required @ male “parts”
I can revise just the bottom piece and you can “test fit”
Just let me know which. (Bottom plate only or specify desired opening size)
EDIT:
I just checked the botttom part opening size and it is currently 0.2550” in my CAD software. (to receive 0.1250” material opening was +~0.1250”)
So to allow for cut taper and a little extra 3/16” (0.1875 + 0.1250” = 0.3125” or 5/16”)
Files for 0.1875" Material:

Re: Firepit (help)
Cut this out last weekend, finally posting up some pics hopefully. The .125 is the size to go for the treadplate, I could actually fit a piece of 1/4 inch in the slots on the .1875 file. No issue with cutting them at all, thanks again!

Looks great.....glad it cut fine(&relieved)
Wondering if I should take down the .1875 files so others can be certain which size/file cuts properly.
