Firepit (help)
The question I have is this " how do you guys bend the correct angle to weld this up". It was such a pain in the posterior to get it lined up. I cut the back as well to make it easier to bend but is there an easier way to put this together?
It probably took an hour just to bend and line up the 4 sides, or is this just how it is?

Re: Firepit (help)
Although it can be mathematically calculated (but I'm not clever enough) what I do for my first one on any mitred pieces to be fabricated is cut a pair of the end section (just the angles bit with about 100mm of straight) out of some light gauge and bend them by trial and error until the two pieces come together to fit snugly at 90 degrees.
Now you have a bending pattern to make a bending template or to set your protractor square.
Or you can use CAD (cardboard aided design)
I usually overbend them by about half a degree, stand the sides upside down on the bench and put a few tacks along the long straights to form a square and then use a crossed pair of sash clamps to pull the bases together. Much easier to use a sash clamp to pull them together than it is to open them up. Tack the base piece in which makes sure it's square and then weld it up.

60 degrees is what I came up with to line the edges up.

I took the bend out, since I didn't want to bend 1/4" (6mm) plate. I cut them separate and welded together, a lot easier for me even though more welding.

Yeah thats not a bad idea too, measured the angle at 116 degrees on the outside, but looking at other ways of making the thing easier, maybe welding is the answer

Re: Firepit (help)
Another reason I did it that way is it gave me more flexibility in where to nest the parts to be able to get it cut from 1 4'x8' sheet!

I must not have enough to do around here. I took the concept and put it to a "tab a into slot b" design. I am not a welder and thought it could be a knock down unit. I may cut it this summer when the snow is gone.

Re: Firepit (help)
Great idea for fire pit. Not sure if the top will slide together at that angle.
May have to modify the side tabs.
Still love the idea. Great work. Thanks for your work.

"Not sure if the top will slide together at that angle."
You may be right,
User beware! Tab mods may be needed. As they say, its the thought that counts.
Edit: I changed the tabs slightly, You should be able to get them together now I hope. If not, use a bigger hammer!!!

Your Welcome.
Was there any issues getting it together. I see you did not put the side slots in, any reason?

no issues, wend together perfectly. I didn't put slots in simply because it's less cutting time. Gave this one away to a charity event.

Went together perfectly . . . I like that . . .
Could you clear up for us exactly which files you cut since there was a little confusion as to which ones would work.
Was the side plate the only part in question?
Also you could offer this with a few different side plates with different messages. Like Merry Christmas, etc . .

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Re: Firepit (help)
I need some clarification.
Which files are used for the smaller pit?
The design is amazing I just can't figure out which side and bottom plates to use as it looks like both have a sister file.
Thanks!!!
