Just made another steel run, still at 52% higher but was told it might go up more in a couple weeks and plateau by Sept.

My 14 gauge went up $10/sheet. He said he has 91 sheets. I asked why the price went up on sheets he has in stock and he said "are you accusing me of price gouging?" The price will be going up higher than that, he said. The tariffs haven't even been imposed yet, so you are just trying to capitalize on the thought. I also have to have my roof replaced due to hurricane Irma, and thought I would go with a metal roof. They doubled in price and said it will be going higher. They quoted me at $30,000 for a metal roof that I was quoted $22,000 on 2-3 weeks ago and said it is because of the tariff. These companies down here are a joke.

Where are you located roughly and where do you buy if you can indulge? I am in the Tampa area

"Never let a crisis go to waste" In the 70's there was a gold price surge as we came off the controlled price of $35.00 /oz. The average gold in the wires of an IC at the time was less than .06 at the higher price but they imposed a "gold adder" that drove IC prices up by over 50 cents per chip. Then you have the "fuel adders " that were imposed on shipping when oil was at 100+ /barrel. When it crashed to 35. I kept waiting for my rebate from UPS and others....it never came.

So there are PROPOSED tariffs on SELECT steel and Aluminum or 25% . Already exempt are Canada and Mexico. But steel being a commodity does not always track with logic or true pricing.

As we can all see this "crisis" has been created and we must endure the pain to pull thru it. I do remember the oil embargo of 1973 and the doubling of oil prices in 2008 but we all survived and are better for these trying times. While we endure the price gouging caused by the "proposed" tariffs on the 4% of steel imported from China this will only convince the Chinese government of an old African proverb that teaches, "The lion does not turn around when a small dog barks".

Don't know how your prices compare, but in the UK I am currently paying for Hot rolled:

3M x 1M x 3mm £85 / per plate + Vat
1.250M x 2.50M x 5mm £95 / per plate + Vat
2M x 1M x 25mm £360 / per plate + Vat

That is single plate qty.

It would be interesting to see what a 4' x 8' sheet of 14 gage hot rolled or cold rolled would be priced at all over the globe.....especially in China, Mexico and Canada. Thanks

At least scrap prices are rising. Was paying $90/ton a month ago for general scrap steel. Now it's $155/ton.

Heavy scrap was fetching about £170 a ton in the UK, a few weeks ago.

If "project tim" gets approved I would imagine it will lower steel prices in the long run. It will take a while, but it's supposed to be the world's largest steel mill. They're trying to put it in Durand, Michigan.

The "project tim" is surrounded in mystery and it's creators want to "borrow" $7,000,000,000 from the federal government to stave off the 4% of steel imported from China using "clean coal" as a power source. The mystery companies are going to remove 1,000 acres of valuable farm land while millions of industrial use acres are available in Detroit and the Flint area where the US companies have abandoned American workers for overseas production? Let's hope it never happens as planned and if it should China will use other countries to import their steel thru the back door. We all agree to creating jobs for American workers but let it be driven by smart decisions and not greed alone. There is a glut of steel production in the global markets and the only people who will benefit are the greased palms of the wealthy so-called investors.
