Grill on barbeque

Post by montanarose »

Hello, I recently cut out a barbeque design out of plain hot-rolled steel and am wondering what's the best thing to put on the grill for cooking ?? Do most just grind it til shiny surface & use oil like a Dutch Oven, or a special coating ?? Thank You

Steaks
Make sure to get the mill scale off then season it with a good cooking oil after that just clean and use a non-stick spray before each cooking 8-)

I try to cut my cooking surface from stainless. Not always but most of the time. I purchase 3 to 4 foot drops (cheep) from a local manufacturer that builds equipment for the food industry.

I made a few grills out of mild steel, each of them warped over time. Since then all have been cut from 304 stainless, no issues at all and they clean easily and do not need any treatment like steel. Jim Colt Hypertherm

I rebuilt my bbq with stainless woven mesh for the cooking surface. Buddy of mine works at a gas plant, no idea what they use the screen for. Wires are about 1/8 inch and the opening are1/2 inch. I did cut from 10 guage a new heat diffuser panel to go down inside works way better than the original tin things that were in there.
Think I managed to attach the diffuser svg.

Does 304 stainless need any prep done before using to cook on?

I cut these for a friend. His old OEM grill grates on his island type propane grill pretty much rotted away.
I am thinking propane is a very caustic gas. I had the same issue on some of the cooking grills I have had
in the past. Anyway, he wanted heavy duty replacement grills so I cut him 5 replacements plus one special
since I had material left over. He is a huge football fan.

I used 3/8" HR plate. Told him to soak in a acid bath for a day or two, scrub really good the burn them in at
the highest heat possible, then repeat the burn in with the new grill covered in peanut oil. He seems happy and
he is not crunching on any left over mill scale. Each on was 19" X 7.5" 3/8" plate
