New member blowing up list

Post by little blue choo »

To the new member who is thanking everyone for shares, some of them over 7 years old and some of the authors deceased , please refrain from posting so many thanks. Most people on here default their search to new post on the quick links page and the 24 thanks you just posted blows that page up and prevents us from seeing a lot of post. Not trying to be disrespectful just passing along a little forum etiquette. :)

I've caught myself thanking people on a few pieces I've used and realized it reloaded it on top of the list.. but I do agree with what you said and just let it be!

The occasional file from the past that pops up is fine. I've seen some great files that got bumped from years ago that I snagged. But I agree that this new member disrupted the flow of the entire file sharing forum. It is nice though to see people say thanks. :)

For sure, I too have stumbled onto files I have never seen before thanks to a bump. I enjoy seeing the bumps but I also agree that was a little overboard. I am sure the new member was just so super stoked to be on board and finding all the cool stuff!

It has it's pro's and cons depending on where you sit, you can certainly appreciate the enthusiasm of a new member!! I realize it could be a pain in the ass to implement, but it certainly may be a good reason to someday consider having a "like button". It is annoying as hell to do a search and get 30+ pages of thank you's to scroll through. When I share a file I consider the download as compliment enough for me.....give the compliments to your wife, you'll get a better return for your payment......

Another vote for something other than a thread full of Thank You's. It makes searching difficult. I appreciate all of the creative things people are willing to share, but I don't find myself posting replies unless I feel I can add something to the thread. Hopefully this doesn't make me seem ungrateful.

I'm all for the Like button, great idea. I will seriously look at implementing a feature like that once I have few other things completed. I appreciate the suggestions :D

Maybe a 'thanks, great file' button would be appropriate as well.....just in case they don't understand that 'like' could mean the same thing :)

Indeed this new member was VERY thankful. I have added to the File Sharing Rules and Etiquette to address this and still intend to add a "Like" button in the future which will really help. Thanks for your patience veteran pspider members :D

I do recall some members that complained "47 downloads and only one thank you" Now we have the opposite thing, one member that is "to thankful"! I too have my notifications set to new posts and sometimes there many from one person, then there is that ONE file from the past that makes you say "why didn't I see that one, it's just what they wanted me to make!" So I will suffer thru all the THANK YOUs and just mumble to myself knowing that in all of them posts may be just that one that I needed. Another thought, if there was a "like" button on the posts wouldn't that bump them up to the front? Otherwise how would you know that someone liked your post???
Just my 2 cents :) :)

Maybe the button could just notify you if you were subscribed to the post instead of moving it to the top. Then only the subscribers would know.

I agree, from a forum etiquette standpoint is it appropriate to thank someone for sharing? When it is too late, a month, a year? If you have found many files you like shortly after becoming a member is it not appropriate to thank the OP on that thread?

I get the frustration, I really do but there is a pretty easy way to deal with it from a 'seasoned user' position. You can see on the right who posted last in the thread, you can see that most are the same. Click on the ones you want to read/help with and ignore the many from the same new user on DXF sharing threads. Then click on forum index and at the top right of the topic list is 'Mark Forum Read' and viola' you're all caught up.

One suggestion I would like to add is to add this "Mark all as read" option to the unread post page. I'm a member of several forums and many have that link there using the same or similar forum hosting software.

You guys all have great points. The thank you's are appropriate and well deserved by the OP who shared their time and skill with us. Sometimes the bumps from the thank you's will present even the most veteran PS member with a post that was never read before, which is a nice surprise! I also understand that many of our veteran members have seen almost everything and a page or 2 of bumps from thank you's can be a pain and out of routine. I imagine a new member who has just found our community is pretty PUMPED and very thankful so let's enjoy it and maybe the addition to the rules and etiquette will keep them from blowing up the list. All in all a thank you is always welcome and once we implement a "Like" button we may end up with pleasant balance between Like's and Thank You's. :D

I think the download counters are an indication of the popularity of a certain file, as well as the post views counter. The thank yous don't really bother me, it just muddies up the list when you are searching for something and 90% of what appears are thank yous. I am however very grateful for all of you who post your work. I'm not an artist by any means, so your work makes me appear to have some sort of talent.

Hats off to the Admin guys, you cannot please everybody
Another suggestion is send a thank you to the original poster as a PM that way they get the pat on the back and the posted list does not go crazy.
The search function is great for all to find new things ( as long as the posted items have not be blown up ).
It may be hard to do but having a star system that rates how many like buttons are pushed next to the original post.
I have found the PM is helpful but not all members even see or read them?? If I PM a member and they don't pick it up in a week I remove it from my outbox :( it works fine if they pick it up I have been helped by those that do :D
Still a great place of check each day :D

Star system sounds like a good idea. It would keep the art threads down to drawings and questions about them. That should lessen the amount of storage space needed for the forum.
