Best way to cut angle iron w/table?

Post by motoguy »

I'd like to use my table to blow holes in some angle, then cut it to length. I'll have the top surface horizontal/flat when the holes are blown. I'd then like to rotate it "angle up", like a teepee, and cut it.  It's 2"x2", 1/8" angle.

Any suggestions on the best way to do this?  Would I start the arc on some scrap. 125 material (beside the angle) to engage the THC, then let it climb the angle?  Any suggestions on THC sensitivity, etc?

I find those sort of parts easier to cut first on the bandsaw and then jig up on the table to do any holes.

14" metal saw/chop saw...for occasional use HF is fine.....faster and cleaner cuts than trying to cut angle iron with a plasma table..simple, fast and cheap solution
I have done many several fab/weld jobs cutting and welding structural steel with this saw...or get a metal blade for a reciprocating saw....

i agree with others, not worth trying to even set up to attempt to try angle. if its possible i wouldnt want to screw up my torch or knock pieces around and mess cuts up anyway. look on craigslist even for a small cheap horizontal bandsaw. i got the harbor freight type one for 65 bucks with a few extra blacks and used it a bunch before getting a much larger better grade saw. chopsaws work but i personally hate the sparks hassle of pulling it out.

Check out the Evolution Rage saws- they cut cleaner, smoother and faster than the abrasive cutoff saws, and without the spark

I do a lot of this type of work what I do is bandsaw to size then cut on cnc
lets say we are cutting a 4by12 peace of angel iron
I will take a sheet of 1/8 then cut a 4 by 12 Square In it then I put the angle iron into the 4by12 opening on the 1/8 sheet now I have my jig I hope that make sense for you

I see. That's how I plan on cutting mine. Your jig idea sounds good, thanks for the info!
