Torch On/Off Relay Connection
Hey guys back again with what would probably be considered a newb question... Running this basic 5 axis BoB (Pictured Below) and trying to hook up pins 3 and 4 FROM the Hypertherm PM 85. Torch turns on when we short pins 3 & 4 so we know that is working. But can't figure out the correct wiring scheme to fire the torch through Mach3. Should we go through the spindle switch? What would those Mach3 settings be? Or is the P17 relay the way to go? Thanks again to everyone on this board for all the help!

Your best bet is to go back to the board supplier and ask this question of them. I cannot see any info in this picture that would steer anyone to an I/O relay output that could activate the plasma. Jim Colt Hypertherm

Thanks Jim, this BoB has been a series of guesses to get things right. Appreciate the input.jimcolt wrote:Your best bet is to go back to the board supplier and ask this question of them. Move the jumper for pin17 then the relay output is on output one on Spindle switch

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
I tried this right before reading this response and when I plugged in the USB power my torch fired wouldn't go off so I killed power to it. What would the settings for Output#1 be? Port:1 Pin:? Active Low: Check or X? Hoping I didn't just toast the relay.... Thanks in advance! (Forgot to add Hypertherm is now fault coding because the torch is "On" so I'm assuming the relay is bad possibly)sphurley wrote:Move the jumper for pin17 then the relay output is on output one on Spindle switch

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
Move the jumper first on the board.
Port one (is parallel port one, Mach can control two) and Pin 17 for output one.

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
When you say "Move the jumper" what do you mean? Our jumper is either on or off. We got the fault signal to go away when we took the jumper off of the board..... Thanks again for all the help. Our supplier ended up being an idiot hahasphurley wrote:Move the jumper first on the board.

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
Jumper should be on according to their paperwork to make the relay work. Make sure you don't have the B axis enabled on the motor settings.

Some of those boards are bad this is the solution atleast for these pinouts..

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
So we got a new board, thinking it might be our relay. Not the case. Our torch is wired into the spindle switch on the board but our PM 85 is faulting because the torch is stuck "On"............. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
If you disconnect the two relay wires does the PM fault go away? If you look at the Diagnostic screen in Mach is output one ON?
You can change the normally open/closed in Mach by changing the output box marked active low.

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
When the wires are disconnected the fault does go away. When the M03 code is givin the Output #1 light flashes, otherwise it is not on. We have wires 3 & 4 out of the Hypertherm CPC to each side of the spindle switch on the board, in ports and pins I have Output #1 on with Port#:1 and Pin#:17 and have tried both marked and unmarked in the active low box with no change. Am I missing something simple? Thanks again for all the assistance!sphurley wrote:If you disconnect the two relay wires does the PM fault go away? If you power off the controller board with the CPC wires connected does the HT still fault? Do you hear for feel the relay click on the controller board?

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
The Hypertherm did not fault once power to the board was removed. We have heard the relay click, but it was with different wiring (1 wire to the switch and one to a ground) have not been able to control the relay clicking with the active low setting on output #1 either..... Thanks again for trying to help! I attached our current wiring for it, not electrical engineers so let us know if we're missing something easy.sphurley wrote:If you power off the controller board with the CPC wires connected does the HT still fault? Thank you again in advance! Is there any other way of controlling this/bypassing with an outside switch or something of that nature? I am open to other remedies.sphurley wrote:Makes me wonder if one of the terminals are normally closed and the other is normally open.

The photo online shows those two pins are the relay contact.

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
If you disconnect the Hypertherm and put a ohm meter across the pins labeled spindle. It "should" be open until you turn on output one and you should hear the relay click.

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
Hello
here is another way to switch external consumers. Two Port Card and a Arduino Relay Board.
Works very well. I thus switch the suction to the Hyperthern main current
and the plasma relay.
Regards Peter

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
Hey sphurley, we did the ohm testing and it seems to be a normally open relay. We have noticed that as soon as the board receives the 5v of power (from USB or hardwired) it closes that relay. I cannot find a way to control the relay in Mach3..... any suggestions? Thanks again!sphurley wrote:If you disconnect the Hypertherm and put a ohm meter across the pins labeled spindle. Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
Try disconnecting the DB25 parallel cable. If Pin 17 on the DB25 is going high then the relay will close.
We need to find out if it is a board issue, Mach issue or PC issue.
Try removing the DB25 first. If the relay stays open then its not a board issue.
Then with the DB reconnected shut down Mach and see if it stays open.

Re: Torch On/Off Relay Connection
We found that as soon as the DB25 is connected, that is enough "power" to close the relay.... The only time the relay is open is when no DB25 and no USB are plugged in. Any thoughts why that would be? Thanks again!sphurley wrote:Try disconnecting the DB25 parallel cable. If Pin 17 on the DB25 is going high then the relay will close.
