What steel for knife blank?
I'm wanting to make some Chinese Cleaver knife blanks. I noticed a few threads where some people on here are making knife blanks. What steel do you recommend? Blade dimensions are 7"x3.5" not including the tang probably in 1/8" thickness. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Most recently the ones we were cutting were out of O1 tool steel, but that was for straight edge razors...

1095 Carbon Steel .125" for 6" or less blades. A lot of people are turned away from plasma cutting blanks due to HAZ but you'll grind that 1/16" off sharpening the thing.

We have a customer that brings in big circular saw blades and BIG band saw blades from a sawmill. He draws out the hardness by heating, makes the knives and reheats them hardening them again. And he sure makes some nice ones.

Re: What steel for knife blank?
Thanks for the suggestions. I would ideally like to find some 4'x4' or larger sheets to play with then purchasing small blanks. I'll check with my steel supplier and see what's available.
