New here and have a question

Post by Shellylucas »

Hi there, we just bought a cnc plasma cutter and I am wanting to learn how to make the family name signs that I see all over Pinterest however I cannot figure out the pattern and they all seem almost the same so I am thinking it's a common file, I just don't know what. I have a vinyl cutting machine so I am pretty good at converting files like jpeg to svg and have converted a couple svg to dxf (if done right). I am going to attach one sign as example what I am looking for. Thank you

If you search Etsy you'll find the files.

This post has the info for you about where to get the letters, they sell both SVG files for the letters and another to make a 3 letter round monogram sign for less then $5. each set.
With the split monogram letters you can use Inkscape to insert the full name in the split section. You open the SVG file for the letter of choice into Inkscape then type your name with the font you like and make it a path. next high light the monogram letter and un-group it so there are 2 parts (top & bottom). Size your name and make it a path using "object to path" then click on "combine" then slide the name into the split. The click on the name and hold the shift key down and click on either the top part or bottom and under path click on "combine". while they are high lighted then hold the shift key down and click on the other part and click on "combine" again this will make it a single path save as a new SVG you done.

Do a google search for monogram designs or monogram frames and there are many to choose from click on one and then go to the site listed.
some are free and others you pay for.

So I followed directions on this post post by acourtjester » Wed Sep 28, 2016 10:26 am on monogram letters. I can save the file as a svg but the letters will cut out when I turn it into a Dxf. Can someone tell me why the Name won't join to the to the bars on the Monogram Letter.

I followed exactly like you said. Opened the Monogram R letter. Picked my Rockland Font sized it and then object to path and then combined it. Then I ungrouped the Letter R slid the name into the slot clicked on the Name held shift down and clicked on the top portion of the R and clicked Combine. Then I did the same for the bottom and saved as a svg. But it doesn't join the name to the bars correct.

Thanks
Mike

Ok here is the file in both SVG and DXF for you to look over. The post above may not be clear.
I cannot tell you why but sometimes when you use the "union" tool under path you need to do it one letter at a time. By this I mean I took you work and used un-group to separate the top from the name and the bottom. The un-group the letters, The moved one letter up to just touch the bottom of the top part, held down the shift key and click on the top part. I then went to path and and clicked on "Union". That connected the first letter and the top part. I then repeated each letter and moved it up to just touching the top and did the thing union again. After all the letters were union to the top I then moved up the bottom part to just touch the bottom of the letters and union that to the top and the letters for the completion.
