Re: Down draft grinding table
I was going to build one years ago, but it never got done and I don't have room for one now.
Just have a sheet metal shop build you a transition from top size of table, 36x30 down to around 12x12 and put a slide out drawer at 12x12 to remove grindings, etc. Part way up the transition tap a hole , add a collar for 6 or 8 inch pipe and route to exhaust fan. Table top was going to be heavy gauge flat expanded metal. Hope that helps or stirs up some design ideas.

Re: Down draft grinding table
I bought a Delta 4x4 down draft sanding table at a garage sale last week for $100. Great deal and it works awesome. Normally sells new for $450. Problem is that it's for wood working. I'm debating if I should reconfigure for metal. The inside throat is a paper filter which would obviously not be good. So what I might do is move the vacuum out from the bottom and build a cyclone trap for the metal dust. The other idea is build a cyclone in the middle prior to the filter, but I need to protype some stuff up to see if it would fit.
The other thing I'm doing is building an air filter from a squirrel fan and motor. I'm hopeful that takes care of the fine dust that seems to cover everything everywhere.

Here's the manual to the table I got. Shows how it's made/structured. Thought you might want to see. http://www.deltamachineryparts.com/docu ... 900512.pdf

Grizzly sells one for metal working but it's nearly $2k. Maybe by next year I will get one. Would be great for painting and powder coating too

Re: Down draft grinding table
I'm currently building two downdraft hand cutting stations to demo the new Hypertherm Powermax45 XP at the upcoming Fabtech show. They could easily be adapted for grinding with a different design up on the top. These use Torit brand welding fume filters. Here are a couple of pics early in the build stage.... Jim Colt Hypertherm

Re: Down draft grinding table
It is a 14", 1/3 HP fan with totally enclosed motor. I built the fan housing.....as this style improves the static pressure so it will pull well through the filters even after they are partially clogged. If you have the ability to roll 16 ga steel....this is a low cost way to make a powerful fan. The TEFC motor is a must as well. Jim Colt Hypertherm The pic is of two 16" fans of similar design that I built for two cnc machine downdrafts last year.

Re: Down draft grinding table
Anyone else have any input? I'm thinking of ordering it
Someone did tell me not to mix them for steel and aluminum because it can ignite and explode. Apparently aluminum dust is combustable. ?

1038 CFM I have not sealed up the 2" perimeter gap so it wont pull enough at the farthest end.

Re: Down draft grinding table
Got the table, So far I only have about 10 minutes with it.
It's pretty quiet and with the air pulling down and the rubber grommets the 19"x19" piece of metal didn't move at all while grinding it
The side walls aren't very tall, the downside is when the metal hits it they bounce off with a lot of force and got behind my full mask. I need to layer the side walls with something fire resistant to absorb the impact
The filters are 16x25x1 and 16x25x2 and both are paper of course. So I thought about replacing them with 1 of each of these
https://www.amazon.com/16x25x2-15-63x24 ... al_qh_dp_t
https://www.amazon.com/16x25x1-15-63x24 ... esh+filter
do you guys think having both of those would be good enough? Some people are saying I need a spark arrestor and a spark filter etc etc
