Elk Camp Barrel Stove

Post by Russ K »

I recently came by three unused grease sized barrels so I built this cute little wall tent stove for Elk Camp from one of them. It is from a small barrel (Approx14" X 27") using a few plasma cut parts. Mostly flying by the seat of my pants on this one but it heats like a champ and does not smoke. Stuffed with wood and damped down it throws even heat for quite a while for a small stove. It is quite capable of driving you right out of a 12' X 14' tent. With the door opening and door itself framed with .125" strap metal and a screw type air vent, it is close to being air tight. The inside grating can be removed diagonally through the door so you can clean the ashes. It uses 6" pipe but it would be easy to make an adapter to any other size. The plasma cut parts are the door, front barrel end plate, spark tray, and the chimney pipe flange. And, of course, the elk on the warming shelf that I adapted from this site. There were also a few misc. small parts such as washers etc. All bolts (except the flange) are backed inside with 2" washers and all parts can be reused on another barrel if this one rusts out. Very fun little project!...RK

amazing build i guess you put a cast iron pan onto of the elk to cook on??? You don't cook directly on the elk right?

The elk is more of a warming shelf than a cook surface. You could keep the coffee pot hot, heat a pan of soup or even bake biscuits in a pan under a tent of aluminum foil. Even though the surface is only 1" away from the barrel and can get quite hot, I doubt it would be an efficient surface to cook on with a fry pan. The unit is not meant to be any kind of a serious cook stove and certainly not a grill surface. More of a tent heater with food warming capabilities. Thanks for the comments. Russ K

Hi zoeconner, the stove is not gasketed and airtight. However, the tolerances of door to frame are quite close and it holds fire for a long time for not having a gasket. It would be very easy to buy a repair rope gasket kit from home depot or lowes and modify the door slightly accept the gasket. You could almost glue the 3/8 gasket to this door and make it work. Probably need to adjust the hinges and latch slightly though. As it is you can almost put the fire out by shutting the air vent completely.
