My 16-Foot Entry Gate

Post by Hootville »

Well....here is my first gate project. Made this 16' single swing gate for my entry, and it was definitely a live and learn project. Drew it up in Autocad from pieces and parts of files posted on the dxf share section as well as a package I purchased from SignTorch. Lower half was cut from two 4x8 sheets of 1/8" and seamed in the center. My only regret is that I used 1/8" for the cutout when I should have used 3/16" for the added stiffness. Thinner cuts are a bit flimsy for something this size. I was trying to keep the overall weight down on the gate for the automatic opener and lighter duty 1-1/4" schedule 40 pipe frame. Total wight about 320 lbs....I will see how it holds up.

Well, here is the gate finished in all its glory. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out with the rustic look and all. I just finished installing the gabion rock monument walls on the sides.....PITA as I had to hand stack them. All I need to do now is tie my wood pole fence back into the gabion walls and install the glass in the light boxes. I will wait until the weather warms up to install an automatic opener as I'm already tired of opening and closing this damn thing

Thanks for looking!

Your gate is as impressive as your view. The art complements nature.

Binderman01,

Good ole rust....I sandblasted the gate down to bare metal as shown in the first photo of the post, then used a garden sprayer with a mixture of roughly 60% water, 30% pool chlorine and 10% muratic acid (pool acid) on the gate, steel casing uprights and Gabon steel mesh. Let it set overnight and sprayed off with the hose next day a few times to get a rusty even look across the whole thing. It starts rusting immediately however with the initial application. Next year I may set the rust patina with a clear coat, but might just leave as-is since it was the exact rustic look I was after.

Thanks for commenting.

The gate and the view are really awesome. Nice Work. Take that picture, enlarge it and hang it in your shop. That's all the advertising you will ever need to do!

Gate looks awesome! How did you bend the top bar of the gate? I've pondered starting a gate project for my hunting ranch, and bending that top part has me stumped.

Scott,

I actually used a HF tube roller for the job as it came with the correct die for my pipe size. Being a Civil Engineer, and having access to a large format plotter I plotted the gate to scale and laid it on the floor to use as a welding template for my internal panel design. Someone more skilled than I could have probably done without the template but it did allow me to keep running the top rail thru the tube roller until I had the right radius that matched up to my cut-outs. So far the gate has held up nicely!
