Parts Bin Storage Rack - Harborfreight Bins

Post by Capstone »

So I've seen dozen of videos of these stacked parts bins that people are suddenly getting organized with.

Most of these are made from wood, but that's not how we roll here. :P

I had a coupon from Harbor Freight for the medium size ones @ $7each, so I jumped on the limit of 7 per day... three times. :) I've got two more to make. I will probably narrow it up a bit so there's more surface for the bin to slide on, and to make it a little more snug, but the design itself wouldn't change, just the frame dimensions.

Using 14ga HRS, I came up with a design that stacks 7 at a time. The bending was tricky. I had to make a special break-die for it and the pressbrake will still deform the outer sides unless you own a super trick CNC pressbrake with a huge throat. I used square tube for the frame; 1/2 for the uprights, which straightened up the sides just fine once welded and 3/4 in square tube for top and bottom of the frame. I also included the .svg design if anyone wants to jump right in. You could easily add sides to close it in, to keep dust out or add your personal touch, but that will of course also add to the weight if you decide to hang it on the wall.

EDIT: I've updated the design to sharpen the corners and to move the shelves down in order to make sure the top bin clears the top frame. The first one I made I noticed that the corners were snagging on the bottoms a bit at the back.

Thanks Phil, great idea.
Keep it simple is always best, roller draw slides are great until they're not so great ;)

I've altered the design somewhat in the original post, so if someone would convert it to a DXF that would be a big help. seed my "EDIT:" note for details.

Phil
I did convert it back on the 30th I did find some double lines and extra nodes in the original that I removed.
When you edited the original post did you change the SVG file?

Yes, I revised the original file and removed the old one. SheetCAM deals with double lines etc with .svg's. yet another reason I don't use DXF if I can help it.

I agree with the SVG file format but someone asked for the DXF conversion.

Just curious, but what are the reasons some prefer Svg. over Dxf.?

SVG seems to be more fluid and less nodes, better for art type drawings IMHO
