Mountain scene gates

Post by muzza »

I'd offer the file for these gates but there isn't one (except for the text) as they are cut freehand, not by me a client/ friend who I do some work for, he's much more talented than me. I did cut the letters though ;)

Once cut out all the features were hammered by hand to give it some shape and then layered for depth.

Thanks Murray, that's the best looking gate I've seen.

Certainly makes a difference when there's a bit of 3D added into the equation.

I hope the hinges are strong LOL.

Very VERY artistic, great job. Love the hammering it really gave it depth and realism to the artwork. Cudo's to you for creating this piece and sharing the results with us. You just brought the game up a notch. ;)

The word amazing does this gate no justice. There are no words good enough to describe it.

That gate is beautiful! But how in the world would a person be able to paint it good enough to keep it from rusting?

That gate is incredibly. You and your friend teamed up great. I would love a gate like that but with 10 feet of snow around here I would be stuck in or out . Looking forward to pics of your next project.

Well I have to say that this is the most beautiful gate I have ever seen bar none. well done. I have seen a lot of gates and have been researching gates for one I want to do and this one blows them all away. I don't know what you charged for that but I say they should have paid a bundle for that work. You have raised the bar on what a gate should look like.

Thanks For sharing

I was at Richards yesterday and told him of all the positive comments from the members here and he was blown away that others would regard his work so highly, I agree with you all 110%, he is a very talented person and a real nice guy too.

I'll get a few more pictures of some of the other pieces he makes, i just cut some more letters for a smaller padestrian gate he's making for the same customer.

I also got the answers to some questions.

The design is cut from 20 gauge cold rolled to be able to shape and hammer it.

It was wet painted. The pieces were primed and painted prior to welding to the frame and then cleaned up and retouched after welding. Area's will rust a bit over time but this is part of the desired effect to give it an aged look.

The metal work that Richard does is not his main thing but a side to compliment his main work of wood carving which he has now been doing for 9 years. His metal working is fantastic but his wood carving is unbelievable.
Here's a life size bust gracing his lounge room.

Murray,

that is the type of art you spend quite a bit of type staring at, the detail is just so amazing. It's not just the detail though, it's how lifelike that face looks.

True artistic skill.

Tell Richard I hope he gets paid what his art is worth. I'm guessing though he's so passionate about the actual creation he doesn't focus as much on what it's worth.

I emailed Richard a link to this thread, here is his reply

Hi Murray

I've been reading the postings on the plasma cutting forum. That was a wonderful surprise Murray, to have a friend say and do such a kind gesture about me and my work. I'm touched and honoured. Thank You.
If you can also pass along to the guys on the forum that I truly appreciate their kind words, It really means a lot!
Talk soon. Richard

Every time I look at these pics, and I've looked at them at least a half dozen times, I'm just amazed at the craftsmanship. It's a good thing Richard's email isn't posted cause he'd get a ton of them. That guy is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!

Hi guys
My name is Richard Yates and I live near my bud Muzza here in Australia. I'm certainly glad that Muzza introduced me to this forum. ( Thanks Mate ! )
after reading ( lurking ) on here and on a lot of other Postings, I saw that you are a very talented, sharing, and good willed bunch!
So I thought I'd take the plunge and join the forum! Even though I don't have a CNC !
But I do have two #Cut 50 hand-held cutters, that have done a lot of work with very few problems.
If I can contribute in anyway to anyone, I'd be more than happy too.
There was a question earlier about the finish on the gates, to prevent rust. Well it's impossible to stop rust indefinitely,
Especially within the narrow plasma cuts themselves. After all options were weighed ( Powder coating, dipping, painting,
Leavening in the raw ) it was decided on automotive 2pac primer and paint on each individual component ( a and their are many! The trees alone are 12-14 individual hand plannished pieces ). Then welded together (Lincoln #SP-175 T. Mig )
Then touch up and re-prime and paint.
If anyone's interested in anymore pics or process pics of some of the other work I've done, just email me. Glad to share!
Regards. Richard

Can you ask your friend how he did the trees? I would love to do this technique on a much smaller scale to hang on a wall inside the home.
