THC Problem cutting 1/4" Plate

Postby tnbndr » Mon Jul 18, 2016 8:44 pm

When I am cutting 1/4" plate it pierces and cuts great for a bit then it starts ramping up the torch volts until it looses penetration.
The DTHC is on and it tries to match the preset volts for a little while and then just keeps going up.
Is there a way when I see this happening to adjust the torch volts down?
I have buttons for volts up/down but that adjusts the preset volts which has no effect on the torch volts.
Any help appreciated.

Check the work lead / ground clamp. I had hell with my height control, and the longer the cut the worse it was. Turned out to be the connection between the cable and the clamp, more specifically the ring terminal itself. It was broken / cracked and when I pulled the bolt out, and moved it just a hair it fell apart. Greatest thing about the whole deal was how I found it. Let's just say it was hot. As in face of the sun hot. Oh, and I was bare handed. The whole clamp was impressively hot actually. Best I could figure, the increased resistance caused it to heat up, which in turn increased the resistance, and so on and so forth. All of which was twitching my height control out in the process.

I'm not going to swear that's what it is, but it's worth a look.

I will check that out in the morning. I have my work lead bolted to a small C-vise grip so contact with the metal isn't an issue but the wire to the bolt could be.

I had same thing happening a few weeks back, more so on thinner stuff, I maybe had the the rate set a little low, it's set at 29% just now for everything and its going well.
I did manage to save the part at the time with extreme adjustment of the preset volts, not ideal though!

Just to follow up on this.
Dan from LDR spent over an hour on the phone with me yesterday running diagnostics on this problem. It turns out a couple of configuration settings got skewed really bad and once we figured that out and put in the required parameters everything seems to be working great.
Today will tell, off to cutting in a bit.
A big shout out to Dan and LDR for great service and support for a two year old table.

Dennis, please share with us what those config issues were in more detail when you can. Quite a few of us continue to see cut quality issues related to DTHC that might get resolved with a little community mindsharing. Thanks

Dennis, please share with us what those config issue

Not sure they are the same for all setups but I will try to remember what they were.
- Tip Saver % was low, changed to 5%
-DTHC settings Upper Volts Fault Limit was at 2048!!! changed to 250
-DTHC sensitivity changed to 16 and
-DTHC tracking changed to 4, both were at zero
-In the HUB utility program the settings for the Z axis DTHC were all wacked -steps per unit was way too low changed to 10,000
max velocity changed to 110 from 300 and acceleration changed to 30 from 20. Also in the top DTHC information section none of the options were clicked on (green).
I took pics of all the screens for reference. See attached.

Thanks Dennis, that info is super helpful. I just cut some 1/4in last night and just turned off the DTHC and ran it at book settings and got nice cuts, but I'll compare your settings to mine and see if there are differences for future reference. Our basic components are identical so its always good to have comparisons with other setups.

So have you tested things with the new settings. Any further changes made?

Once setup correct.it's about perfect. I have the 3100 model..(mostly factory settings) I really never need to program all the turn off the THC stuff everybody seems to add to SheetCam when using the older version THC.. Once in a while I just edit the S20 code to to S10 to turn the THC off for small circles.. I can add it auto, but not a big issue either way..

I have been cutting for about a week now, 1/4" plate , 12 gauge and 10 gauge using my settings derived from running line tests with DTHC off.
Everything is cutting great, in fact I think better than ever which makes me wonder if some of the config settings were jacked for awhile.

Thanks for sharing, Dennis.
This is very good info for folks like me with an CandCNC Ethercut control.
