New Base Table - Powdercoating?

Post by Capstone »

I am at the stage of my base rebuild where I need to take the decision on whether or not I should spend the extra money to powdercoat the entire base before moving on to the next step of transferring all of the moving parts (rails, gantry, etc) from the old table. I've finally determined that the "wheelbase" of my table simply can't stabilize the massive gantry weight I'm attempting to use. I added the gear reduction pulleys to my gantry and it's even more heavy.

Anyone have any experience with either or both and if they would do it the next time? just looking for opinions.

My other options are to leave it bare with mill-scale (like my first table) or I could rattle-can it.

Here's a pic of the new custom gussets I built into the design to reduce flex on the base legs.

I use a two parts heavy duty paint from Tractor Supply, they have QTs, and reducer and hardener be about $35 for enough to paint the base.
I Mix then spray with a small gravity feed gun cure overnight. I use black

I love to use Rust-Oleum Hammer paint. It Stops Rust, hides flaws and imperfections found in scratched, rusted or pitted metals and is very durable. A quart cost $11.99 at my local Walmart and $15.99 and Ace Hardware. It can be brushed, rolled or sprayed with a little thinning. I like to paint the inside corners and hard to reach places with a disposable brush and then roll the larger areas with a small trim roller with a very short lent less nap. TIP: apply pretty heavy, makes for a much better looking finish, do not apply thin layers.

I went with some rattle-can Ford Blue "farm" paint from TSC. My shop is in my garage in a quiet suburban area so I can't get away with a full paintbooth type setup. I did use some etching primer first. It's gonna get scratched pretty fast; it's already showing some dings around the wheels, but overall it looks a lot better than my old bare metal table you can see in the background
