Re: Sand Blasting

I built my portable sandblaster from a 100lb propane tank. I cut the bottom out, put a fill hole in the center, inverted it and welded the bottom back in. Been using it for 30+ years.

Re: What steel for knife blank?

We have a customer that brings in big circular saw blades and BIG band saw blades from a sawmill. He draws out the hardness by heating, makes the knives and reheats them hardening them again. And he sure makes some nice ones.

Re: Still going like hotcakes...

Off hand I can't tell you. I found the "Baby Rockstar Sparkle" on the Prismacolor website and it lists the black to be used as the base. We've used the sparkle on several different colors but it just doesn't show up as good as it does on black.

Re: large self closing hooks

I have no intentions of making any but just curious. There's a local fab shop that builds guard towers and they have a considerable amount of AR500 scrap left over so I'd think that'd be pretty reasonable. In the past I've bought AR400 from them at a good price.

What if a person were to cut some from AR500? Just curious.

I checked several powder websites and they all had "rust" powders.

Re: Surface finishing tool

Dennis, Since you've used these, I'll pick your brain. Today we cut a large sign out of 12g hot roll. It was too big for the blast cabinet so I thought about a burnisher to remove the mill scale. Will cleaning around and between the letters eat up a stripping or conditioning wheel pretty quick? Or w...

Rick,
I "think" Prismatic Powders has it. A few weeks ago I was looking at a number of powder suppliers when I ran across it. I'll look and see if I can find it again.

Re: How do you prep prior to powdercoating?

I use a FLAT flap wheel to remove the dross which is minimal, then beadblast. Then it's ready to powdercoat.

When our PM65 was a few months old it started doing that at times...sounded like a steam locomotive chugging. Hypertherm sent us a new board and that took care of it.

Re: Layered Signs

The few times I used epoxy I used a Dremel with a grinding wheel to grind off the paint/powdercoat. A lot quicker than masking. But I use 3M automotive tape most of the time.

For one to work good I think sizing the holes to fit the bolts is pretty important. When I assembled mine I used lock nuts to barely get any looseness out.

We've made about 70 of them and our customers pay when they pick them up. No problem yet. BUT, we know everybody we've sold them to. If we were making them for resale, then it'd be a different story.

We've cut two of these signs 32" wide from 14g so, judging from that, I'd go with 12g minimum.

Larry, I'd love to finish it with Bill Worden's patinas but the customer wants to finish it. It'd sure look good with a "copperish" finish on it.

End of the trail

Wifey cut this one at about 39" tall out of 16 gauge galvanized. One of the best cuts we've done yet. I just sprayed the metal with anti spatter and there was no dross whatsoever...couldn't believe it.

Black base, then Baby Rockstar Sparkle. We've tried the BRS on other colors but nothing pops like the black base.
